We came home from the hospital on Wednesday with our new baby girl.

Our bundle of joy was born on Saturday, June 21, 2008.

Unfortunately, the drug free delivery I had been planning using HypnoBirthing went out the window since she never dropped and my body made no progress towards preparing for labor despite visits to my acupuncturist for assistance. I ended up having a c-section 11 days after her due date.

Turns out that was what I needed because our baby weighed in at 9lbs 14oz (4481 grams) and 21 inches long (53cm) with a 15 inch head (38cm). My acupuncturist said my pelvis is narrower than average and when she was delivered my OB said the baby had started to pass meconium in utero so I believe I made the right decision even if it isn't at all what I had envisioned.

We are all doing well. When we first came home from the hospital, Popeye and I were concerned about how to do all this baby care on our own without a nurse just a button away, but I think we're doing better than I had expected. Baby Bonk has been sleeping soundly in our bed. I'm glad I had planned to co-sleep. With my incision healing it is much easier to roll over and pick her up to nurse than get out of bed and go to the nursery to check if it is time to feed or change her.

Since the baby has been sleeping well at night, the proud father and I are also sleeping well. I think we've slept better at home with the baby than we did in the hospital since I'm not hooked up to beeping machines and nurses aren't coming in to check my vitals or take the baby away to check her blood sugar. For a while they were checking her blood sugar right before every feeding since she had lost more than 10% in her first 2 days. Since she was so big, I just hadn't started milk production to keep her from losing weight and had to supplement with formula. Fortunately, my milk came in before we were discharged and she put on 3oz the last day just from breast milk. Woo hoo!

Now I need to concentrate on recovering physically from the surgery. I'm not good at just taking it easy and it has been impossible thus far to limit my trips up and down the stairs to twice a day. My goal for today is three trips up and down. I can't wait to get off my pain meds.

Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive. It's wonderful to have such caring friends and family.
